Dear Members of the Practice Management Knowledge Community
(PMKC):
As the 2008 chair, I thank you for your continued membership to
join in the PMKC.
I would like to take this opportunity to bring you up to speed on
PMKCs accomplishments for 2007, and to inform you of our
plans for this year:
Two new subcommittees were formed in 2007 to
address the needs of our membership: Best Practices and
PMDigest.
The PMKC Best Practices subcommittee reviewed
approximately 350 AIA
Best Practices, made recommendations for each and created a few
new entries. Please remember to consider this source the next time
you are looking for information related to any aspect of your
firm.
Three issues of the PMDigest
were issued in 2007. The Digest Committee took a new approach,
providing fewer issues with significantly richer content. Each
issue provides access to relevant articles, case studies, podcasts
and face-to-face learning opportunities.
Once again, the PMKC had an extensive presence at the 2007
AIA Convention. The PMKC Lunch Seminar was sold out and
PMKC AG members lead, participated in and sponsored twelve seminars
and workshops, each of which was attended by hundreds of people.
Below is a sampling of these sessions:

Professional
Practice in the 21st Century
PMKC co-sponsored a December 2007 Conference, The Future of
Professional Practice, along with the Technology in
Architectural Practice KC, and with participation from the AIA
Small Project Practitioners Knowledge Community (KC), the AIA
Design/Build KC, AIA Integrated Practice and the AIA
Educator/Practitioner Network, as well as from components,
including AIA Northern Virginia, AIA Washington DC, and AIA
Delaware. The event was a tremendous success with over 300
attendees attending some 35+ session and keynotes. The event drew a
uniquely diverse crowd and offered many viewpoints on where the
profession is headed. Look for conference materials, including
downloadable speaker presentations, in the
Conference Report.
As you can see, 2007 was a year full of success, and we hope the
value you received as a member of the PMKC was just as
exciting.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Grant Simpson, FAIA,
of RTKL, for his tremendous leadership and efforts on the PMKC
Advisory Group. Grant has served for 5+ years on the AG and now
steps down from his official role on the PMKC Advisory Group. We
look forward to his continued enthusiasm and insights, and thank
him for the integral role he played during his term.
As we begin 2008, I welcome our newest member Marjorie Callahan,
AIA from the University of Oklahoma College of Architecture.
Marjorie joins the following members of the PMKC Knowledge
Community Advisory Group:
- Sara A. McCann, AIA - 2008 Chair
- Michael Strogoff, AIA - 2009 Chair
- James Sawyer, AIA - 2007 Chair
- Cliff Moser, MSQA, AIA, LEED® AP 2010 Chair
It is with tremendous excitement that I can assure you 2008 will
provide PMKC members with even more value than last year:
The PMDigest
sub-committee has begun recruiting a new editor for each issue,
which to date has resulted in substantially expanded content and
rave reviews from our members. If you have not already read the
first issue of 2008 please take a few minutes to do so. This issue,
as well as archived issues, can be found online.
The PMKC will have a strong presence at the 2008 AIA National
Convention. We encourage you to select your continuing
educational opportunities wisely by looking for the most
appropriate classes. Here are just a few that touch on the many
aspects of Practice Management:
The 2008 AIA PMKC Fall Conference entitled "Leveraging Your
Resources: Doing More with Less" is scheduled for October
16 - 18 in Chicago. The conference will focus on providing tangible
resources targeted to benefit small to mid-sized firm while also
being applicable to larger firms. The information shared at the
Fall Conference significantly affects the majority of the PMKC
activities. Content will be developed for several editions of the
PM Digest and we will encourage speakers contribute articles after
the conference in order to ensure that the information is available
those unable to attend. Highly-attended sessions will be turned
into podcasts or Web Seminars for distribution to a larger
audience. Look to the PMKC Web
site for future information.
I hope you can tell by this email how excited I am to build upon
the past success of the PMKC. The Advisory Group can not do this
alone, however, and we encourage everyone to become engaged in some
fashion.
If you have any questions or comments, or wish to become more
involved in PMKC, please email pmkc@aia.org.
Sincerely,
Sara A. McCann, AIA
