Director, Web Development
Function of the Position:
This is a professional position, in the Web Management and Development department, responsible for the operation, development, and maintenance of the web presence, which includes the design, development, deployment and ongoing management of all web properties at the AIA. The incumbent will help identify Web audiences and establish appropriate content parameters to address their needs and coordinate with all information resources e.g. AIA departments, components, members, and partnering organizations to ensure that the AIA has a usable, high quality, integrated, up-to-date Web presence. The incumbent’s responsibilities will also involve coding, hands on development, system design, and developing and executing technical content plans to successfully deliver the AIA web products and initiatives to market, manage, maintain, evaluate and adapt the site(s), and all related products and initiatives over time to ensure that established benchmarks are met. The Director, Web Development reports to the Managing Director, Web Management and Development
Job Duties:
• Oversee the development and integration of online systems and services for AIA Web properties,
including aia.org domains and external domains.
• Implement the organization’s Web strategies as defined by the Managing Director, Web
Management and Development and the Vice President, Integrated Web Strategy and
Technology, and others on the Leadership team.
• Interface effectively with a wide variety of patrons to efficiently identify and verify needs and
ensures requirements are met.
• Serve as a technical lead and perform development tasks.
• Perform code and system architecture reviews.
• Perform infrastructure analysis.
• Work with other AIA programs to integrate and improve the Web and QA processes.
• Coordinates long-term operations of the Web effort with other members of the AIA staff.
• Provide Web operations updates to management on an ongoing basis and stays current with
emerging technology and reporting tools.
• Stays current with emerging technology and reporting tools.
• Lead Web implementation and development.
parameters and consults on departmental budgetary needs.
• Serves as primary point of contact for issues relating to development, implementation, and
administration of the Web and related technologies.
• Makes recommendations for and directs implementation of new technological enhancements of
the Web that facilitate more efficient production and usable business and content tools.
• Contributes to monitoring various Web issues that may present potential legal problems
(trademark/copyright infringement, libel, controversial issues), and refers to the General
Counsel’s office.
• Join and monitor development of the user communities and support networks to ensure that
recent Web developments are reviewed and incorporated.
• Work closely with AIA Executive and Management staff to develop and implement
organizational Web strategies, policies and procedures.
• Manage Web budget within signature authority.
• Manage effectively in a team environment.

KSAs and Training and Experience:
Considerable skill and expertise in Web management and development. Extensive project management skills. Considerable skill in website metrics, metrics terminology, and analysis. Substantial experience with metrics associated with Web sites and other Web analytics data. Ability to work collaboratively, set priorities, manage multiple projects successfully and maintain a strong attention to detail. Familiarity with development and implementation of content management systems. Experience with programming languages and the results that can be achieved. Must have strong interpersonal skills. Experience with SEO and SEM. Skill in the use of Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Adobe Writer (PDF development skills) packages, HTML (hypertext mark up language) and Internet and WWW protocols. Ability to quickly learn and adapt to complex interrelationships within the AIA and the architectural profession.
Demonstrated expertise in Extensive experience in object oriented programming. Experience with Java, IDocs, JSP, Ruby on Rails, Servlets or other 3rd level development language. Position requires excellent interpersonal and customer-service skills. Demonstrated skill with SQL server and relational database development, server management, and Internet and WWW protocols. Strong working knowledge of Content Management Systems. Knowledge of browser differences/limitations and how to create cross-browser solutions. Experience working in a professional, team-oriented environment and/or experience working on commercial sites. Experience building templates or editing content within them preferred. Experience building website templates(cutups) from layered design comps preferred and/or experience modifying them
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Business (Master’s degree preferred) and eight (8) plus years of professional experience in Web development and maintenance or online production/communications with a minimum of five (5) years as a back-end developer, working in a deadline-driven environment producing websites or web applications. Technical and Content Quality Assurance orientation is highly desirable. Knowledge of Stellent and Endecca desirable.
