Podcast: 2011/5/12 – 18:42minutes

Guest: Ellen Dunham-Jones, AIA

Moderator: Mike Crosbie, Ph.D, AIA

Today we talk with Ellen Dunham-Jones, AIA is an award-winning architect and professor of architecture and urban design at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where she teaches contemporary theory and design.

Ellen is a leading authority on suburban redevelopment, she and co-author June Williamson wrote Retrofitting Suburbia; Urban Design Solutions for Redesigning Suburbs, just reissued in an updated paperback. The book examines more than 50 case studies across North America of "underperforming asphalt properties" that have been redesigned and redeveloped into walkable, sustainable vital centers of community—libraries, city halls, town centers, schools and more. The book was featured in Time Magazine’s March 23, 2009 cover story, “10 ideas changing the world right now.” Ellen takes an unblinking look at our underperforming suburbs -- and proposes plans for making them livable and sustainable.
