The Business Case for Diversity: Policies, Practices, and Tools for Creating a Successful Workplace

Carole C. Wedge, FAIA, LEED AP, is president of Boston-based Shepley Bulfinch Richardson & Abbott, a national architecture and planning firm, where she specializes in education planning and programming for academic clients. Carole chaired the Boston Society of Architects’ host committee for the AIA 2008 National Convention in Boston. Among Carole’s many organizational involvements, she serves on the AIA Community Committee.

Carl Roehling, FAIA, is president and CEO of SmithGroup, where he has led many of the firm’s most notable projects. Carl also has held AIA leadership positions at both chapter and national levels, including service on the AIA Board of Directors. He received the Gold Medal Award from AIA Detroit and AIA Michigan, both of which he has also served as president. In addition, Carl is the current president of the Michigan Architectural Foundation.

Meg Brown, an HR veteran with over 25 years experience, successfully integrates resource development and recruitment while effectively promoting "borderless" environments for a multi-office firm. She is recognized for her attention to detail and her ability to merge the many cultures of a large firm through collaboration, learning and leadership development. As a member of the AIA HR Large Firm Roundtable, Meg worked with her peers to create a Shared Learning Initiative Program, which focuses on Project Leadership, Scope Management and Project Planning. Meg has also been an active member in the Design Council and TQA Council, which both foster Design and Technological Excellence.

Diversity is important to a society and a client base undergoing significant demographic change. Many in the design profession are broadly aware of the importance of workplace diversity—or its absence—but far fewer understand the business case for diversity and how to establish a corporate culture that begins with a “diversity of mindset.” Our three panelists for this podcast will discuss the policies, practices, and tools that can help firms achieve a level of organizational diversity that is no longer optional.

Carole Wedge, Meg Brown and Carl Roehling provide insight into the diversification of the workplace. Today, firms and their clients are becoming increasingly more diverse and it is evident that those firms who are the most diversified gain the most profits in the industry. Diversity in the workplace is relevant in that it provides a broad skill set and mind set to better serve and interact with clients. Connection and outreach to students in communities who are not exposed to diversity in the workplace is an important way to further educate people interested in the architecture profession on the benefits of  a diverse environment.
