Umber Kazmi, AIA. Umber is the CEO and founder of Funkaar Studios, specializes in Architect Registration Exam preparation. In 2006, she personally developed a curriculum designed to lead candidates to successful completion of all ARE divisions over a 3-month period. The program has recently gained recognition as the largest ARE program of its kind in the nation. It is now offered in over 15 citites nationally, serving over 2,000 ARE candidates annually. It is also offered in congunction with local AIA-Chapters, as well as the AIA-National Convention. Currently, Umber serves as adjunct faculty at the Newschool of Architecture in San Diego teaching courses in Structural Design. Formerly, she has also served as visiting faculty at the University of Washington in Seattle. Umber is working on a new A.R.E. review book scheduled to be release in 2010. She is a former graduate of University of Illinois Champaign

Architect Licensing is increasingly becoming an important topic in the field. With currently seven exam divisions, candidates are seeking answers to approaching this daunting task. Many don’t know where to begin and some have been attempting to complete the licensing process for years. In this interview, Michael Crosbie discusses the Architect Registration Exam and preparation for the licensing test with Umber Kazmi, CEO of Funkaar Studios and adjunct faculty at the Newschool for Architecture in San Diego, California. Umber defines the formatting and curriculum of the new A.R.E 4.0, how the new version differs from the 3.1 version and the effect of this change upon the licensing process.
