The Firm of the Future: Big-Picture Trends Shaping the Future of Design Firms

Raymond F. Kogan, AIA, president of Kogan & Company, specializes in strategic planning and management consulting for design firms. In 2007, he co-authored Strategic Planning for Design Firms, a book published by Kaplan AEC. Ray is one of five members of the AIA’s Practice Management Knowledge Community Advisory Group and is also a co-founder of A|E Advisors, a national network of industry-leading consultants providing specialized and complementary business skills and services to architecture, engineering, environmental, and construction firms. Previously, Ray was a Vice President with ZweigWhite, where he led the firm’s Strategic Business Planning Group. He has presented seminars on strategic planning, leadership, and future trends in many cities across the country. A registered architect and AIA member since 1979, Ray received his B.S. in Architecture from the Ohio State University.

Strategic Planning has increasingly become an important aspect in the firm culture. Questions such as “Why does my firm need a strategic plan, how do we prepare for one, and what issues may arise from the new plan” are common questions in design firms. New technology, different generations coming together in the work place, industry trends, and many other changes will have a large impact on the future of design firms. By using a strategic plan, firms will be better prepared for these changes and how to adapt to them moving forward. In this interview Michael Crosbie and Ray Kogan discusses these “Big Picture Trends” that are molding the future of design firms.

Other topics explored include the changing role of the architect in the future of projects, the increased role of project managers and the importance of planning for the changing role of traditional architectural services.
