Rena M. Klein, FAIA, is principal of RM Klein Consulting, a Seattle firm offering business planning services, meeting facilitation, and management education to leaders of small design firms. She is also a lecturer at the University of Washington, an adjunct professor at Washington State University's Interdisciplinary Design Institute, a member of the AIA's Soloso Editorial Content Review Board, and a past president of AIA Seattle. In an economic downturn, small firms, those with 20 or fewer employees, can be particularly hard hit. They often have less backlog and limited resources. It's easy, therefore, to view staff lay-offs as the first step to cutting costs. Klein, however, urges listeners to resist that initial impulse. Instead she offers firm principals other strategies to use. Podcast: 2008/09/29 -- 19:54 Presenters: Rena M. Klein, FAIA; Ray Rhinehart, PhD, Hon.
