Carmen Pérez García, Hon. AIA | Notes of Interest

Carmen's wisdom and experience have benefited not only the members of her chapter, but also her colleagues across the U.S. Though she is from a small, single staffed chapter, she shares her insight and enthusiasm with other component executives of chapters of all sizes. She is the first Executive Director of LRGV AIA and has served in this position for over 19 years. In those years, Carmen has been instrumental in bringing about significant improvements to her local community through critical alliances she has helped forge between architects and allied professionals. A prime example of her leadership is the continued success of the annual Building Communities Conference at South Padre Island sponsored by her chapter. The event, having just celebrated its 19th anniversary, brings together architects, landscape architects, urban planners, interior designers, contractors, and engineers from across Texas for three days of interdisciplinary dialogue and fellowship.

In 2001, the Texas Society of Architects recognized Carmen with Honorary TSA Membership for her service to the LRGV. Carmen has chaired the Diversity, Continuing Education, and Public Affairs Advocacy Networks for CACE and served 2 years on AIA's Communities by Design Committee from which the notion of Centers for Architecture was born. She served as the CACE representative on the evaluation team for selecting the AIA's advertising agency, Giant Ideas, during her tenure on the Public Affairs Advocacy. While serving on the Center for Communities by Design, she represented CACE at the Knowledge Communities meeting in Savannah, Georgia. She most recently served on the Documents Workgroup, a CACE group of Full Service Documents Distributors that makes marketing and profit sharing recommendations to the AIA.

Carmen Pérez García is a passionate person! She’s passionate about the environment, she’s passionate about educating children, and she’s passionate about architecture!! Simply put, Carmen is a champion for architects and architecture.

Jury Comments

Her passion transcends the architectural community. She has an incredible gift of fostering relationships with people from all levels of the AIA despite the limitations of the size and remoteness of her chapter.

This isn’t a job for her, it’s a mission.
