Ana Isabel Guerra, Assoc. AIA | Notes of Interest

The leadership Ana exemplifies is evident in every area of her life, both professional and personal. Her influence grows each time she guides and teaches other Associates, helping to ignite a passion for service. She has proven her commitment, integrity, and vision at the local, state, and national levels of the AIA.

Her AIA service began at AIA Austin in 2001, where she served on the Home Tour Committee. A move to Annapolis, Maryland, in 2002 landed her on the board of directors of AIA Chesapeake Bay and Associate director for the Mid-Atlantic region, a position that involved communication with all the chapters in the region in order to elevate the voice of Associate AIA members.

When she became chair of the National Associates Committee in 2003, her influence changed the landscape for interns and young architects. Her position as chair of the NAC elevated her to the AIA national board and then to the national AIA Executive Committee. In both of these venues, Ana was a strong voice in the debate to allow interns to take the ARE while completing the IDP. The AIA board voted to support this move in 2005, and Ana was instrumental in getting NCARB to implement this significant change in its procedures. Every newly registered architect is indebted to Ana’s work on this issue.

Having first passed through the AIA board in 2004–05, she was asked to return again in 2008–09 to replace an Associate representative who resigned. Despite the demands of a growing family and a new position as regional quality assurance manager at Jacobs Facilities in Dallas, Ana knew that the rewards of recommitting to the AIA board would outweigh the challenges. She participated in all the committees she had grown to love from her first board experience—Long-Range Planning, Community, and Governance—and this time she was the voice of experience. Her legacy is the significant changes she brought to the perception and involvement of Associate members.
