Ashley W. Clark, Assoc. AIA | Notes of Interest

Ashley’s position on the AIA national board of directors is a tribute to her accomplishments and passion for the profession, but her achievements at the local and state levels of the AIA and AIAS have had a lasting impact on generations of architects to come. In her work to shape AIA policy and the changing practice of architecture, she has been a consistent national voice for architecture students and Associate AIA members.

Through her involvement with the AIAS studio culture initiative, she learned that patience, perseverance, and collaboration could result in cultural changes in the profession. Her election as Associate director of AIA North Carolina in 2008 provided a platform for advocating for another issue important to young architects, concurrency. She worked with the North Carolina state licensing board to open up earlier opportunities for candidates to take their licensing exam. Her efforts were successful, and the board approved concurrent testing in 2009.

Ashley was appointed to the South Atlantic Regional Council in 2009 and subsequently to the National Associates Committee, which she chaired in 2011. Under her leadership the NAC established a visual brand, developed a strategic plan based on member feedback, and successfully advocated for accountability measures for IDP supervisors and opportunities for Associates to hold component leadership positions.

In 2013 she became the senior Associate director on the AIA national board and Executive Committee, where she has continued to highlight issues important to the next generation of architects, including mentorship, diversity, and alternative career track development. She is currently taking her exams and working as the marketing manager for LandDesign, Inc. in Charlotte.
