Karen E. Williams, AIA | Notes of Interest

Karen’s dedication to and passion for what it means to be an architect is abundantly evident in every aspect of her work and life. In addition to her work as an architect at HKS Architects, she is a mentor, leader, teacher, and role model who strives to build a better community for all.

She was instrumental in founding AIA Orlando’s Women in Architecture Committee (WIA-O), which has become one of the chapter’s most active committees. Karen’s vision for WIA–O was to address diversity, design, and balance in the profession and to create a vehicle to connect women at all stages of their careers. With more than 100 members, WIA–O has not only been a huge success in the chapter but has also spurred AIA Florida to focus on women in the profession. In addition, Karen serves as secretary of the board of AIA Orlando. In recognition of her commitment to the profession, her leadership skills, and her active involvement in community service, Karen received the chapter’s 2012 Fred Pryor Young Architects Award. She also was selected to represent Central Florida at the 2012 YAF Summit 20 in Washington, D.C.

Her volunteer activities include service with two organizations—Outreach Love Inc. and Greatest Investment Girls Empowerment Summer Camp—that work to inspire young people in Orlando to take advantage of all the opportunities for their future. She also serves as chair of the city’s Board of Zoning Adjustment, where she provides insight and understanding of the built environment to fellow board members and guides them in making informed decisions.
