Nathan Kalaher, AIA | Notes of Interest

The breadth and quality of Nathan’s accomplishments, especially given that he has been a licensed architect for less than 10 years, are simply remarkable. Even as an undergraduate, he was committed to the healthy rejuvenation of his community, Sioux City, Iowa, and today this commitment is reflected in his practice and service to the city.

In 2010 Nathan co-founded PLaN Architecture with his wife, Lisa Kalaher. From the outset, the Sioux City firm has been committed to community and professional service and public-private collaborations to advance the city and the region. He was instrumental in working with the deans of the College of Design at Iowa State University to develop Design West Studio in Sioux City, three hours from the ISU campus. It was originally conceived as a satellite design studio that would use the city as a Midwestern context for study. Today, Nathan is working with ISU, the state, and various city agencies to explore the possibility of creating a graduate program in historic preservation at Design West.

Nathan has shown an overwhelming commitment to the profession and the AIA. He is actively involved in AIA Iowa and led an outstanding spring conference that engaged not only AIA Iowa members but also landscape architects, planners, and members of Main Street Iowa. He is currently president-elect on the chapter’s board, and, when he assumes the presidency in 2014, he will become one of the youngest chapter presidents. His focus is on advocacy issues and stressing to young chapter members the importance of being engaged leaders and instigators of change.
