Notes of Interest
Located in the heart of the University of Pennsylvania, Skirkanich Hall is home to the Bioengineering Department. It is an infill building that functions as a connector by creating a new public quadrangle and entry for the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
Movement and interaction is emphasized with generous circulation spaces that offer places to sit and gather. To subtly stand out from the red brick buildings next door, a new kind of brick was developed through an extensive process to balance texture, color, durability, and stability.

JURY COMMENTS
There is a thoughtful use of
materials, genius in vertical
circulation, solid
programmatic
resolution…both delicate
and dramatic, all in all a
beautiful project.
The more and more we
looked at this project we
could see the sophistication
and skills of an architect
who really knows and
understands space,
circulation and light. This
project achieves so much
with very little.
Initially I was overwhelmed
by the beauty of this
building, upon closer
inspection one sees the
complex adjacencies of
other buildings that quietly
merge into this building.
The section is brilliant.
