2010 HONORARY FELLOWSHIP

Ramon Vilalta Pujol, Hon. FAIA

The AIA Honorary Fellowship program was developed as the international counterpart to the Fellowship program. Election to honorary fellowship not only recognizes the achievements of the foreign architect as an individual, but also elevates before the international public and the profession a model architect who has made a significant contribution to architecture and society on an international level.

An architect of esteemed character and distinguished achievements who is neither a U.S. citizen nor a resident of the United States and who does not primarily practice architecture within the domain of the Institute may be admitted to honorary fellowship.

Ramon Vilalta Pujol, Hon. FAIA, of Olot, Spain, completed his studies in architecture at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura del Vallès (ETSAV) graduating with a degree in architecture in 1987. For nearly twenty years he has been practicing with his partners Rafael Aranda Quiles, Hon. FAIA, and Carme Pigem Barcelo, Hon. FAIA as RCR Arquitectes. The body of the firm’s work is staggering, both in its quantity and quality. Built mostly in the rural areas surrounding Olot, the work is tied powerfully to the Catalan landscape. Its strong sense of place is directly linked to the close partnership the principals have kept in Olot, working side by side, realizing their own version of Catalan regionalism. Ramon, as spokesperson for his firm describes the work as inseparable from one partner to another. Theirs is very much a collaborative practice, the antithesis of the heroic archi-type, yet certainly no less decorated or honored.

Anne Schopf, FAIA, sponsor for Ramon’s Honorary Fellowship, noted that his work “spans building type and style as evidenced by his sculptural bathing pavilion, his luminous kindergarten, and elegant folding toilet. He is a man of many pursuits, receiving not only a degree in architecture, but also landscape architecture and continues to teach both urban planning and landscape architecture at ETSAV.”

Ramon is the recipient of the 2005 Architecture National Award in Catalonia, and the 2008 Chevalier de l’ordre des arts et des letters of the Republique Francaise. In addition to the numerous awards that RCR has received for its projects, their work has been featured in several international exhibitions including the III Salon International de l’Architecture in Paris in 1990; the XVIII Congress of Union of International Architects (UIA) in Chicago in 1993; the Venice Biennale 2000, 2002, 2006 and 2008; the Eurasia Extreme Expo Aichi in Japan and Madrid in 2005-2006; and On-Site: New Architecture in Spain at the MoMA of New York and Madrid. Their individual exhibitions have been in Tokyo (Works 1988-98); Spain (Exfoliacions); and Bielefeld, Germany (RCR Arquitectes).

In his letter of recommendation Josep Maria Montaner, professor at the Barcelona School of Architecture states “Ramon’s work has a special characteristic and relationship with the landscape.” He further comments that “his most remarkable works with RCR are in the landscape – Piedra Tosca Park and the Athletic Stadium in Olot, and the Bell-Lloc Winery in Palamos, Gerona…Ramon’s work is far above the rest of the contemporary architecture in Catalonia.”
