While business conditions at U.S. architecture firms remain challenging in the aftermath of the recession, most firms have benefited from an overall improvement in the economy as well as in the construction sector.

    • Revenue at architecture firms increased by nearly 11% from 2011 to 2013—and firm payrolls have followed suit, according to U.S. Census Bureau figures.

    • After hitting a low in 2011, architecture firms have seen slow but steady improvement, with payroll employment increasing about 3%.

    • By metro area, average compensation for the Intern 1 position ranged by more than $9,000 - from under $37,000 in Denver and Honolulu to over $46,000 in Washington, D.C.
