2007 AIA National Convention & Expo News

Honorary Fellows International Forum
Nine new Honorary Fellows were inducted to the AIA College of Fellows in 2007. International Committee (IC) chair Harold Adams, FAIA, RIBA, JIA, and vice chair Judith Mitchell, AIA, moderated the program and presented the work of the Honorary Fellows. While business commitments and personal issues prevented several of the honorees from attending, those present engaged in a lively and compelling discussion of global architecture.

As part of the 2007 AIA National Convention, the following people were named Honorary Fellows of the Institute, in recognition of their contributions to world architecture:

Emilio Ambasz, Hon. FAIA
Italy

Nominator: Carol Rusche Bentel, FAIA
His remarkably prolific, international work as a lifelong designer, teacher, theorist, and curator has served to link practice with theory, architecture with industrial design, and past with present, reflecting extraordinary wit, deep intellectual curiosity, and profound human intelligence.

Victor Canãs, Hon. FAIA
Costa Rica

Nominator: Metcalf Crunp, FAIA
A significant emerging design force in the Central Americas and the Caribbean region, he is leading the way as an architect and professor to design site-sensitive architecture, applying exquisitely detailed glass, metal, concrete, and stone in ways uniquely appropriate to tropical settings.

David Chipperfield, Hon. FAIA
United Kingdom

Nominator: Carol Rusche Bentel, FAIA
Since his early days working at the side of Britain’s most renowned living architects, he has distinguished himself as an original, significant design talent and a leading force in the profession. His work now spans the globe, garnering universal acclaim for its power and unstinting drive for excellence.

Francine M. J. Houben, Hon. FAIA
Netherlands

Nominator: Carol Rusche Bentel, FAIA
Exercising profound influences in both the formal and the intellectual realms, she is among Europe’s most active architects, leading her firm and the Netherlands to interweave social, technical, and human factors in achieving uniquely wonderful, unorthodox designs. Her work reflects both analysis and intuition, combining a range of design disciplines with remarkable sensitivity for light and beauty.

Victor Manuel Legorreta Hernandez, Hon. FAIA
Mexico

Nominator: Buzz Yudell, FAIA
He has established himself as a leading international architect through a body of work that is bold and sculptural and deeply humane, sensitively connected to its context and responsive to place and environment, supporting a commitment to the humanistic values of architecture while addressing the contemporary needs of society.

Adolfo Natalini, Hon. FAIA
Italy

Nominator: Arch. Giancarlo Alhadeff, AIA
His work, from the founding of Superstudio to his body of built projects in Europe, emphasizes the compelling line drawn from the youthful, utopian approach to the language of built forms through to the humanistic reinterpretation of traditional forms.

Dominique Perrault, Hon. FAIA
France

Nominator: Carol Rusche Bentel, FAIA
Whatever the size of the project, the buildings have transformed the architectural landscape like the elementary volumes of a minimalist sculpture transform the surrounding space.

Eduardo Souto de Moura, Hon. FAIA
Portugal

Nominator: Anne Schopf, AIA
He has distinguished himself as a leading cultural mediator, architect, and teacher through the simplicity and strength of his architecture, combined with his vast knowledge and skilled application of modernist principles, drawn from both North America and Europe.

Chris Wilkinson, Hon. FAIA
United Kingdom

Nominator: Michael Lischer, AIA
His unique use of materials, manipulation of form and space, and creation of elegant long span structures has greatly influenced modern British design. His contributions to architecture were recognized by Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II in 2000.

International Presidents’ Forum
The presidents of a dozen national, regional, and international architectural associations, along with the presidents of the U.S. collateral organizations, met for a two-hour business meeting to discuss current issues in the profession in a multilateral forum. This is the sixth year of the International Presidents’ Forum, first held at the AIA's 2002 convention.

The meeting agenda included three items: an update on sustainability initiatives since the previous meeting; offshore outsourcing; and a document to be submitted to the World Trade Organization to define disciplines (trade rules) on trade in services in the architectural sector.

All presidents were invited to submit updates on their national activities and any other documents they wished to share to contribute to the discussion of the agenda topics. The papers and the minutes of the meeting are posted below.

AIA IC Reception This year’s reception was the usual huge and diverse crowd. Images Publishing again sponsored the event, joined by co-sponsor Satellier, Inc. We are extremely grateful to our sponsors. If you missed the party this year, don’t ever do it again!

Joint Meeting of the IC and the Overseas Chapters
The meeting was an opportunity to bring these two constituencies together, to discuss the International Situation Assessment and ideas for moving international cooperation forward; along with other issues of concern to the overseas chapters and international practitioners.

The meeting was much more enjoyable for the milk and cookies provided by sponsor NDH Search, a firm specializing in strategic recruiting and professional placement for architecture and design.

AIA-JIA Business Meeting

The AIA and the Japan Institute of Architects (JIA) held their traditional biannual business meeting at convention, attended by AIA and JIA officers, IC Advisory Group members, and National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) officers. Discussions focused on the further development of the new JIA Architects Registration system, the Japan Accreditation Board for Engineering Education (JABEE), Integrated Practice, and UIA activities.
