International Presidents’ Forum
In 2001, the AIA initiated a meeting at the AIA National Convention, The International Presidents’ Forum. The meeting enables presidents to update each other on special events, emerging issues, and particular concerns of their members. The presidents of U.S. collateral organizations also attend the meeting. This is a 2-hour business meeting of the AIA President and the presidents of the international, regional and national architects associations who attend the convention, along with their senior officers and staff. The presidents of three U.S. collateral organizations (NCARB, NAAB, ACSA) also attend this meeting. The meeting focuses on issues that can be discussed in an open multi-lateral forum. This year, President Schwennsen chose three topics for discussion: sustainability and carbon emissions reduction; continuing professional development; and integrated practice, building information modeling, and interoperability. The Presidents submitted updates on the activities in their countries in advance, leaving the full two hours for discussion. The agenda included discussion of sustainability initiatives, continuing professional development, and integrated practice (IP), building information modeling (BIM) and interoperability. The presidents found that their associations were too far apart on attitudes toward and development of integrated practice, but a short statement of the principle of interoperability will be drafted and circulated for signature by all the presidents in attendance. Again, it was the party of the convention in a room packed with International Committee members and international guests, made exceptional through the continuing support of Images Publishing of Australia. No agenda, but it was an evening packed with high level exchanges on policy, critical issues and liquid refreshment.
