The 1:2 Student Design Charrette offers a one day design community - building event in support of an interior architecture competition amongst regional architecture and design students.

This scholarship program is modeled after a popular production offered by the AIA Los Angeles Interior Architecture Committee. The 16 year old program in Los Angeles awards $23,000 annually to the top three tier student pairs and brings together practicing architects, interior designers, and representatives from a dozen design schools in the area.

On charrette day, the 12 pairs of students arrived at the host design office location sans computer but armed with drawing and modeling materials. After the design brief was announced, the teams worked six hours while volunteer architects and interior designers advised on time management and mentored their design development. A one and a half hour preliminary jury process ensued to select the six finalist teams. Meanwhile, teachers, fellow students, families, local architects, interior designers, and sponsors networked and socialized. Six finalist teams were given half an hour to prepare for five-minute presentations to the gathered audience. The jury deliberated and announced the winners and the evening culminated in a festive celebration. The scholarship awards were formally presented later to the winning students at a major local AIA event such as the Design Awards Gala. 

The production script for this program is captured by the AIA Interior Architecture Advisory Group into a toolkit for other local scholarship startup efforts. The kit offers organization charts, calendar, task lists and sample documents, event images and graphics generously shared by the AIA /LA Interior Architecture Committee.
