COLLABORATION

Close collaboration with radiologists, surgeons from multiple specialties and biomedical engineers has led to a space that has equal potential for use by neurosurgery, oncology, cardiothoracic, cryotherapy and endoscopy.<BR /><BR />

The flooring pattern serves specific functional purpose of marking the gauss lines and table swing but also introduces color into a graphic that enlivens the space. <BR /><BR />

The remarkable sense of openness created by the "en suite" configuration of the spaces and the large viewing windows makes the AMIGO project uniquely different from a typical OR.<BR /><BR />

The design intent was to showcase this truly remarkable suite by creating a memorable space that symbolizes the extraordinary potential of the work occurring within the AMIGO Suite.<BR /><BR />

Design Solution

The design solution for the new Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) is driven by two concepts: the idea that the 838-bed medical campus will be “three hospitals under one roof” and that it will be “a city within the city.” SKMC combines a General Hospital (with a Level One Trauma Center) and tertiary Women’s and Pediatric Hospitals; it was imperative to the client that each hospital have its own identity within a unified and cohesive campus. The design solution balances unifying and differentiating elements (derived from the building enclosures) that are introduced at the campus edge and reinforced throughout the medical city. SKMC’s size, its very name and the client’s high aspirations led to the idea that the project could exceed a hospital or medical center and act as a medical city within Abu Dhabi, with a bustling campus-like environment of distinct character, vibrant public spaces and a sense of community. The design solution focuses on creating a true sense of place, supporting core functions and instilling more of the everyday into what is typically a stressful and emotionally-charged setting. Through the Town Center and Campus Common, SKMC’s design creates an uplifting vision of health and healing.

Jury Comments

This is a unique workable concept that emphasizes good attention to cultural sensitivities and details. There is wonderful use of nature and open space to humanize a very large program and the design for this facility provides cultural relevance to the dramatic large scale project.

The use of city planning organizational principles is a sophisticated way to accept and make sense of the scale of such a complex. The integration of a shared space structure, specifically the three types of garden, gives scale and texture to this large complex. The use of cultural reference inn the facades and surfaces is sophisticated and modern.
