Committee on Architecture for Education AIA Education Research Scholarship

The AIA Committee on Architecture for Education (CAE) was proud to offer the 2012 AIA Education Research Scholarship. This program asked one selected emerging professional (defined below) to conduct research on learning environments for comparison and analysis.

The Scholar spent their summer conducting comprehensive professional research on Architecture for Education case study projects.

The Scholar had their completed work published on AIA websites.

The Scholar was funded for their research and worked in full equivalent to a 12 week summer architectural internship at $7,000.

Eligibility Requirements

The scholarship application is open to all emerging professionals defined as:

    • Undergraduate and graduate students in NAAB-accredited architecture programs

    • Architectural interns active pursuing licensure

    • Young architects (architects with 10 years or less of licensure)

Submission

Please submit one PDF document to CAE@aia.org.

Applications were evaluated by a jury of practicing architects and AIA staff. A scholar was selected following the application deadline.

2012 Recipient

The Committee on Architecture for Education selected Kelly Martinez, Assoc. AIA as its 2012 research scholar. Under the mentorship of members of the CAE leadership group, Kelly conducted a post-occupancy research on several geographically diverse education projects. Three research case studies were selected by Kelly from among the last three years of National AIA | CAE design awards projects. The projects will be evaluated based on stated project goals, the success of those goals and the impact of the project on teaching and learning.
