AIA Presents… The Corcoran Gallery of Art and College of Art + Design

The American Institute of Architects is pleased to present the first of a series of collaborative exhibitions that will foster interdisciplinary education and appreciation within the fields of architecture, art, and design. To engage a wider audience, the AIA is working with our fellow members of the arts communities to highlight works of relevant content and character within and surrounding the design fields. These featured works will enable our organization to develop continuing relationships with our allied members of the arts communities. As we move toward AIA 2012 National Convention and Design Exposition: Design Connects, these features will initiate the conversation of our presence as individuals in a much larger collective world where design has the opportunity to thrive.

The Institute asks that you assist in our efforts to consider the New York Avenue home of the Institute as the “American Center for Architecture” by inviting your fellow architects, artists, photographers, designers, and musicians to visit this continuing exhibition in the coming months…and hopefully coming years!

In the spring of 2011, the Corcoran Gallery of Art and College of Art + Design— the AIA’s closest artistic neighbor—presented a “dynamic, interactive, and innovative exhibition” that featured thesis work of senior students in the college’s Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program. The exhibition, NEXT at the Corcoran: BFA Class of 2011, was both an opportunity for students to present and display work from their creative thesis projects in the fields of design, fine art, and photography, as well as an opportunity for the Corcoran to celebrate the accomplishments of its graduates. For more than 120 years, the Corcoran has educated and trained students – the next generation of America's artists – while displaying the most important works of the time.

Featured in the AIA Presents… Exhibition are four selected works from the NEXT Exhibition—three photographic series and one artistic installation—that reflect the artistic and architectural connections within the design world. These works have been adjusted to accommodate the AIA Presents… Exhibition and may not appear in their entirety. For more information on the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Corcoran College of Art + Design, the artists, and how and when you can attend an exhibition—like NEXT—at the Corcoran, please visit www.corcoran.org.

Tim Anderson, 22, is a native of San Jose, California. A career change prompted Anderson’s mother to relocate him and his sister to the Washington, DC, area while Anderson was in his early teens. He finished high school in Maryland and was admitted to the Corcoran College of Art + Design in 2007. Anderson’s work is currently centered on themes of time and events; “through time the nature of their relationship to each other may change, yet will always still exist.”

Matt Borowick is a New York City native and a recent graduate of the Photojournalism program at the Corcoran College of Art + Design. Borowick has exhibited his work in both solo and group shows in the New York City and Washington, DC, metropolitan areas. Before his work being featured at AIA Presents…, Borowick’s work was featured in NEXT at the Corcoran: BFA Class of 2011, in May 2011. Currently, Matt Borowick is living and working in New York and Washington, DC.

Jacob Roethlein, 22, is a practicing sculptor from Northern Virginia. Much of Roethlein’s sculpture and artwork focuses on minimalism ideals. Joseph Sherrock was raised in Columbia, Maryland, where he graduated from high school in 2006. Sherrock enrolled in Howard Community College (HCC) where he attended his first photography class and participated in the International Education programs offered by the College. This opportunity allowed Sherrock to travel with students and teachers to Mexico, Turkey, and China. Sherrock graduated in 2008 with Honors and was soon accepted in the Corcoran College of Art + Design. While studying at the Corcoran, Sherrock participated in a three-month photo-editing internship at the Newseum in Washington, DC. During his internship, he worked with the Visual Resource and Collections staff where he was exposed to a variety of exhibits, including the Journalist Memorial and the 9/11 Exhibit. Currently, Sherrock is looking forward to a number of internship positions with the Student Conservation Association where he intends to challenge himself under new circumstances while continuing his photographic undertaking.
