SPP Journal No. 44: Call for Submissions

Call for Submissions to SPP Journal No. 44
Finding Vision in a Vacant Lot: Architect as Developer

The coming issue of SPP Journal will be focused on architects who develop their own projects, and the clients who love them (think about that for a moment).

AIA Small Project Practitioners (SPP) requests articles (approximately 800–1,200 words) and practice tips (approximately 100–400 words) for SPP Journal No. 44, Finding Vision in a Vacant Lot: Architect as Developer. Please share an experience, an anecdote, a failure (lessons learned the hard way), or a proven best practice. We always need “tips”—the little gems you can share to make our work easier and our practices more successful.

As an added incentive, there is a possibility that one of the submitted articles will be chosen for publication in Builder/Developer magazine. So give it your best shot, and include two high-resolution photos.

From the Editor

I myself have never developed a project, but I have to admit that it is a dream of mine. Why? More control. Less interference. My taste. More money. Better payoff. I do what I want. I’m a better gauge of the market than they are. I know what I want, and how to make it happen. These are just some of my thoughts in all their fault and glory.

Why do you decide to design and develop a project yourself? What are your motivations, dreams, reasons and results? Is the market open to your vision? Do you see opportunities that others miss? Are you more satisfied? Is the payoff worth the effort? Do you bank more money? Would you do it again?

Please answer these questions, as well as any I haven't thought to ask. You are the people with the experience; please help guide the rest of us myopic souls.

Thanks in advance,

James Cline, AIA
Editor, SPP Journal

Images and Submission Guidelines

We are visually oriented people so please include graphics, drawings, or photographs that enhance your submission. We want to see behind-the-scenes construction photos, sketches, detail drawings and their transformation in the field. We even want cartoons.

The online version of the SPP Journal is set for color images. Please submit images of at least 150 DPI as separate .JPG files, and include image credits and caption information.

Submit all text as MS Word documents and include an abstract of the article, not to exceed 100 words. In addition, provide a two- to three-sentence description of the author. Title your work, and include a signed copy of the AIA Copyright Permission form, listing the article and all images.
