Located in Seattle's Capitol Hill, Bertschi is a? K through 5 ?independent school. Since its inception in 1976 the school has grown steadily, starting with the renovation of an existing church. The newest structure, completed in the spring of 2007 by The Miller | Hull Partnership, completes the expansion. The school now occupies an entire block, its edges anchored by iconic elements; the scale of the new concrete form? on the south acts as a counterpoint to the old church steeple on the north.
The new 12,500 SF center contains a gym/performance space, art and music classrooms, art gallery, and below grade parking. Large roll up glass doors? open the gym ?to an all-weather synthetic playfield eliminating irrigation and reducing maintenance costs while allowing school events to take place in the space year-round.
Essential to the design was the use of natural light to illuminate the spaces; a Daylighting Study was provided to optimize window, skylight size and placement. Occupancy and daylight sensors were then utilized to minimize the use of electric lighting during daylight hours.
As a result of the strong environmental consciousness at Bertschi, the architects worked with students during the design phases to pinpoint relevant sustainable strategies for the project. The outcome was an innovative rainwater harvesting system; ultra-low water use irrigation systems combined with highly amended soils, drought tolerant plantings and pervious play areas; a cistern for hand watering the student garden areas; a green roof; and a canopy of photovoltaic panels.
The green features and strategies of the project were made visible, educational and interactive for students through a kiosk in the lobby.
Pursuing LEED Gold certification.
