Letter
from the Editor
Welcome
to the fifth edition of The Academy Journal published by the AIA
Academy of Architecture for Health (AAH). We could not have reached
this milestone without the continued support of the AIA, the hard
working staff, and the many member volunteers who have contributed
to our growing and continued success.
The Journal
is the official publication of the AAH and explores subjects of
interest to AIA-AAH members and to others involved in the fields
of healthcare architecture, planning, design and construction. Our
goal is to promote awareness, educational exchange and to broaden
our base on understanding about our clients.
To date, the
hard working Editorial Review Committee (ERC) reviewed over 100
articles and responded to countless inquiries, encouraged numerous
writers, and provided endless opportunities for publication to new
and seasoned writers. With this issue, the Journal will have selected
and printed 50 articles supporting the enhancement of the built
environment for healthcare. Articles have been submitted by architects,
physicians, nurses, other healthcare givers, academic research scientists,
and students. Through earlier articles, and those in this edition,
we have explored a broad range of topics including: the future of
healthcare architecture, cardiac care, creative innovations in ambulatory
care, improved cancer care environments, emergency care, the bedless
hospital, current trends and future forecasts of healthcare facilities,
the future of women's care organizations, planning a Gamma knife
center and design/build in healthcare project delivery process.
Visit The Academy Journal archives for earlier articles you may
have missed.
We continue
to expand our successes by creating for the first time this year
a separate section for Graduate Fellowship research project articles.
We also continue in our efforts to develop a cross reference article
index, develop a broader base of readers especially from the international
community, and seek out the possibilities of a sponsored hard copy
edition of the electronically printed articles.
My special
thanks to the members of the ERC for 2002: Jean Barber, Program
Manager; James G. Easter, Jr. Assoc. AIA; Ed Jakmauh, AIA, ACHA;
Dennis Quagliani, AIA; Joyce Redden; John Sealander, AIA; and Chris
Upton, AIA. We are still learning, still experimenting and still
attempting to improve our process and product. We appreciate your
feedback and suggestions and would welcome additional assistance
on the editorial board. Call AIA Staff member Tarra Davis at 202-626-7557
or me at 631-444-2536 if you are interested.
