Watch your e-mail for the call for entries for the 2006 BIM
Awards to be issued in fall 2005. The TAP Advisory Group wants to
avoid any confusion about what is or is not a BIM. AG Chair Jim
Bedrick, AIA, has proposed the following definition, which has the
advantage of also suggesting a progression of technology
adoption:
A BIM is an object-based model of a particular project. The
first step toward integrated practice is to get adept at building
these. The BIM as the source of truth for a project is the key to .
. . VDC (virtual design and construction), which is the process of
using the BIM for simulation of the building and its construction.
This fits with CIFEs definition, which is the earliest
mention Ive seen (the piratical actions of my friends at
Graphisoft in copyrighting both virtual building and
virtual construction not withstanding). VDC can be
leveraged within a single firm and is the basis for . . .
integrated practice, which is basically collaborative VDC.
BIM projects will be judged in the following categories:
- Stellar architecture
- Delivery process
- Inspirational pilots
- Analysis/simulation
- Academic program/curriculum.
The 2006 BIM Awards will be announced and presented at a
luncheon during the TAP workshop, Models for the Future of
the Architecture Profession: The Risks, Rewards, and Opportunities
of Technology, June 6, 2006, in Los Angeles.
