AIA Sustainability

Architects and Green Buildings

For more than 30 years, the AIA has been working with members and their communities to create sustainable, environmentally responsible projects. However, the issue of climate change and the impact of buildings on carbon emissions is a compelling new message that must be communicated and acted upon in a new way by our members.

Why does the AIA care about this?

By the year 2035, 75% of the building area in the United States will either be renewed or new construction. This presents a huge opportunity to make a difference and for architects to be a part of the solution!

Architects have solutions to reduce carbon emissions, but first we need to make our members and their clients aware of the impact buildings have on climate change.

50TO50

50to50 is a set of 50 principles relating to sustainability, energy conservation, and carbon reduction to help members move toward the Institute’s 50% energy reduction targets. A primary objective for the 50to50 list is the development of a highly interactive web tool that is flexible, accessible in many ways, and will provide information at a level of detail appropriate to the user.
