Code Update Delay

The Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) continues to review proposed updates to the Wisconsin Commercial Building Code. DSPS officials indicated during a recent conference call that the building code update package appears to be on track for a January 1, 2018, effective date. The initial target was to have the new state code in place by September. Public hearings were held on the proposed building code update package in late January and early February. AIA Wisconsin supports updating state code provisions to incorporate the 2015 editions of the ICC model building codes. DSPS has not yet submitted the update code package to the Legislature for review. Until the new code becomes effective, architects can submit projects using the 2015 IBC via a petition for variance at 50% of the typical fee. Check DSPS website for details.
