Thirty students and volunteers gathered at the Dayton Metro Library Saturday for an all-day design charrette for the 2018 Student Design Competition. The project is to design a youth hostel, a project which has captured the imagination of the students and advisors at Centerville, Vandalia Butler, Marion Local, Charminade Julienne, Oakwood, Upper Valley Career Center, Miami Valley Career Technology Center, and the Dayton Regional STEM School. Volunteers from the City of Dayton assisted by providing a history of the proposed hostel site, hostels in other countries were researched, sketching exercises were performed, and a modeling activity featuring four seasons of the Flight Line were undertaken.

The Student Design Competition is a hypothetical architecture prompt offered to high school students. It begins each year in mid-January and goes through March. Meetings for the competition mimic college studio classes and are held at design oriented or architecturally significant local venues. Designs are judged by local design professionals and several scholarships are available to winners.

The 2018 Project

Dayton is a growing city with many possibilities and opportunities for unique places. As a companion project to a proposed elevated park and bikeway in downtown, the proposed project is a hostel serving approximately 50 people. A variety of sleeping quarters and associated support spaces will be required in the final design.
