AIA Montgomery Design Awards
Enter the 2021 AIA Montgomery Design Awards
AIA Montgomery is proud to recognize excellence in architectural design work of its members through its Design Award program. The goal of the Design Awards is that of the Alabama Council: to elevate the quality of architecture in our region, and to establish a continually progressive standard of excellence by which architects can assess their own work. Awards are presented at the Montgomery Chapter AIA Awards Gala in December.
Each submission will be judged according to its own merit, how well it solves the problem addressed, and sustainability. Projects will not be judged in competition with each other, but by measuring the architect’s performance against each project’s potential. Awards can be given in the following three categories:
Honor Award: The highest level of recognition that the Chapter bestows to firms for projects displaying exemplary design exceeding the criteria set forth by the jury.
Award of Merit: Bestowed to firms for projects that meet the jury’s requirements for design excellence. Award recognition is based on the success with which the project has met jury criteria.
Honorable Mention: At the jury discretion, bestowed to firms for projects that have met the jury’s requirements and deserve to be commended.
AIA Montgomery will recognize projects that exemplify design excellence and achievement from the following categories: Residential, Commercial, Institutional, Special, Detail, and Un-built Works. All projects, whether primary building design, renovation, adaptive reuse, interiors or other design should be included in the appropriate category that best describes the work.
Residential: Includes single family, multi-family (apartments, condos, etc.), dormitories and may include other projects where residential usage is primary but other uses are also included.
Commercial: Includes all projects for private developers, corporations, etc. such as retail, hotels, offices and other for-profit development.
Institutional: Includes all educational projects, all projects for governmental authorities, churches and related facilities, medical facilities, as well as projects for similar public /private institutions.
Special: Includes all projects which do not fit into one of the above categories. These projects may include planning, energy conservation or projects that by their nature are simply unique.
Detail: Includes millwork, handrail, stairs, floor patterns, trim work, structural connections, and many others where the detail elevated the project to a higher level of excellence.
Un-built Works: Includes any un-built work that has been accomplished by a firm or an individual. This is open to any project of any type that has not been constructed yet. Submission requirements are the same.
Entries must be completed architectural projects that have been produced by, or in collaboration with an architect member of the Montgomery Chapter of the AIA who is licensed and practicing in the chapter area at the time of project completion. Projects may have been executed anywhere in the U.S. or abroad and must have been completed within ten years of submission (with exception of the “Un-built Works” category). Previously submitted, non-winning projects and those projects who have won awards in other programs are eligible. An entry may be of one building, a related group of buildings forming a single project, an interior design project, or a project detail. The term “building” includes a new architectonic composition as well as the remodeling, rehabilitation, and/or preservation of existing structures.
