Our Own Champion
“Blueprint for Better Communities – CA Champions: We are thrilled to hear that several Californians have been selected as “Blueprint for Better” Champions: Carlo Cacavelle, Hon. AIA/LA; Mandy Freeland, AIA; Mike Malinowski, FAIA, and Phil Bona, AIA. If there are others who I’ve missed, please let us know in the comments. These citizen architects will be key liaisons between the AIA National Blueprint for Better program, and their local governments, architects actively working with civic leaders to enact change. More about it…
The Champions have been invited to attend the 2018 AIA State Government Network Conference in Madison, WI in July for special training on “increasing architects’ engagement with their communities around pressing issues like climate change, housing, and public health. Attendees will learn how to structure authentic community engagement processes for effective civic leadership around issues relevant to their own community.” (SGN Agenda, Description of Blueprint for Better Training Session). The other California champions are from San Diego, Los Angeles, and Sacramento. My intention is to act as Champion for our chapter and the California San Joaquin Valley chapters that will be facing growth with the high speed rail stations. We are all very similar in demographics and values and will be presented with opportunities to improve our communities with the imminent challenges that come with new transportation hubs: increased population, evolving infrastructure, broadened safety concerns, socio-economic diversity, cultural shifts, and equity-in-community challenges. Architects are in a unique position to facilitate solutions between the various community and government stakeholders and act as advocates for all. My goal as our Champion is to help architects get a seat at the table for these conversations to evolve to actionable, equitable solutions for our communities.
