The American Institute of Architects North Alabama Chapter (AIA North Alabama) announced the winners of its 2018 Design Awards program and annual Cocktail Napkin Sketch & Square Photo Contest Thursday night, September 20, 2018, at an evening celebrating the achievements of the north Alabama architecture community. The Awards were presented by AIA North Alabama Chapter President Jennifer Thorington-Hines (EDT-THA Architecture), President Elect Michael Dowdy (Chapman Sisson Architects) and Les Tillery (Fuqua & Partners Architects). The awards were preceded with a talk by Dennis Madsen, Manager of Urban and Long-Range Planning for the City of Huntsville.

The AIA North Alabama Design Awards program recognizes excellence in design, planning, and construction of projects located anywhere in the world that are designed by AIA North Alabama architects registered and licensed in the State of Alabama. Rhea Williams of Karma Management / AL Center for Architecture along with the AIA North Alabama executive board members organized the event.

The intent of the Design Awards program is to honor the highest standards of design in response to user requirements, site, context, climate, and environment as well as nurturing new values and activities that contribute to design and design appreciation. Each entry, regardless of size or classification, is judged individually on the basis of total design merit.

Design Awards were given in three categories of distinction: Honor, Merit and Citation. This year the jury also awarded a Special Recognition award for social impact. The jury, consisting of three distinguished architects from Miami, David M. Harper, Richard Luis, Arnaldo Sanchez and one architecture graduate student, Alejandro Castiello, decided the type and number of awards. The criteria used by the jury included design quality, program resolution, innovation, thoughtfulness and technique.

There was also a People’s Choice Award and Cocktail Napkin Sketch & Square Photo Awards all voted upon by the attendees of the program. As well as a Top Block award which was presented by John Sorrell of Alabama Concrete Industries Association our Title Sponsor for the evening.
