Regional Representative │ North Central States
AIA Wisconsin has the opportunity to appoint the next Regional Representative for the North Central States region on the AIA Strategic Council. The three-year term begins in December 2019.
The North Central States region includes Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota. With over 3,700 AIA Architect and AIA Associate members, the North Central States has two Regional Representatives serving staggered terms. The appointment of Regional Representatives is rotated among the four states.
The AIA Wisconsin Board of Directors encourages members interested in serving on the national AIA Strategic Council to submit a letter of interest with a statement of qualifications.

To be considered for the appointment, a letter of interest with qualifications statement must be submitted by July 15 to:

Eligible candidates must be an AIA Architect member and an assigned member of AIA Wisconsin in good standing. Review Committee members include AIA Wisconsin officers plus Regional Representatives from the North Central States region.
The Review Committee will evaluate the qualifications of candidates in relation to established selection criteria. Depending on the number of members interested in the appointment, the Review Committee may schedule interviews with a shortlist of candidates.
The Review Committee will submit a recommendation for the Regional Representative appointment for consideration by the AIA Wisconsin Board of Directors. The recommended candidate may be invited to make a short presentation and respond to questions from Board members. The appointment process is expected to be completed by late August.
Qualifications & Criteria
The statement of qualifications submitted with the letter of interest should address the following selection criteria established for the Regional Representative appointment:
- Leadership – Demonstrated leadership skills and experience with the AIA and/or other similar professional organizations.
- Strategic Thinking – Ability to address issues strategically and use “blue-sky” thinking to explore new ideas and solutions.
- Time Commitment – Ability to commit the time required, both personal commitment and the support of partners, firm and/or employer.
- Communication – Effective communication skills and ability to engage AIA members and component leaders in region.
- AIA Structure – Understanding of AIA organizational structure, responsibilities of Regional Representative position and relationship of AIA Strategic Council to the AIA Board and leadership of state and local components in region.
- AIA Service – Interest, if any, in AIA service beyond term as Regional Representative.
- Other – Other relevant skills, talents and/or experience that illustrate a commitment to innovation and collaboration.
The statement of qualifications may include up to three letters of support from AIA members.
AIA Strategic Council Purpose, Composition & Responsibilities
The purpose of the Strategic Council is to advance the profession of architecture by informing the AIA Board and other Institute bodies of important professional issues and opportunities. The Strategic Council has an outward and forward-thinking focus. It is charged with identifying opportunities and threats as well as planning to inform the goals, objectives and strategies of AIA.
In addition to the Regional Representatives for the Institute’s 19 geographic regions, Strategic Council members include the four current AIA officers, immediate past president, At-Large Representatives, Associate Representative, Student Representative, CACE Representative and the AIA EVP/CEO.
Strategic Council responsibilities outlined in AIA bylaws include:
- Identify issues and opportunities
- Disseminate information on AIA priorities and activities
- Reflect and represent the geographic and demographic diversity of the profession
- Elect at-large directors to the AIA Board
- Survey the profession to identify opportunities and threats and to inform goals and strategies
- Recommend public policy positions
- Strategic planning for the Institute
- Review the AIA operating plan and budget
- Engage in leadership development
- Propose committees and task forces
Job Description – Regional Representative
Regional Representatives must be energetic and able to commit significant volunteer hours. In addition to teleconferences, the Strategic Council meets face-to-face at least twice a year. The AIA funds attendance at these meetings. Members also are required to participate in a Work Group established to study a specific issue and may be appointed to AIA Board Committees and asked to serve on task forces.
Regional Representatives are encouraged to attend AIA component meetings in their region to engage with members, report on Strategic Council activities, solicit input on relevant issues and gain an understanding of member concerns.
The AIA provides a regional travel stipend for use in covering expenses to attend statewide component meetings. The two Regional Representatives for the North Central States often stretch these funds by splitting up and sharing the responsibility for these component meetings. For example, AIA Wisconsin invites a Regional Representative to the state conference and the planning retreat.
