AIA Chesapeake Bay Board President, Matthew Ormsby, AIA, addresses the crowd

The 2019 Chesapeake Bay Excellence in Design Awards program culminated in a festive evening of celebration on Friday, November 6, 2019, at Historic Inns of Annapolis. More than 130 guests enjoyed tasty food, drink, music, socializing, and People's Choice voting of professional and student entries. The awards program featured a keynote address by AIA 2019 First Vice President/2020 President-Elect Jane Frederick, FAIA, who focused on climate change action at the forefront of AIA's global agenda for 2020. Professor Rob Lowe of Anne Arundel Community College talked about their renowned Architecture & Interior Design program prior to joining Department Chair Mike Ryan and Professors Brandi Shepard and John Nolis to present the following students with awards:

Citation:

Mihail Maksic, for "Ink/Color Rendering of Washington DC" (Hand Delineation)

Timothy Hemphill, for "Ecosistence Ecology Center" (Design Project)

Merit:

Adrienne Maykrantz, for "Ink and Color Drawings of Alexandria, Virginia" (Hand Delineation)

Jeffrey Myers, for "The Cellular Center" (Design Project)

Honor:

Mark Davis, for "Chance, Order, Change - Annapolis Modern Art Museum" (Design Project)

As the Honor Award winner, Mark also receives a scholarship check for $1,000, which is awarded by AIA Chesapeake Bay's joint program with AIA National.

The professional program saw 12 architectural firms from AIA chapters in Maryland, DC, and Virginia receiving 15 awards. Following are the professional award winners:

Waldon Studio Architects, for "Bay Area Community Church Student Center and Children's Wing", Non-Residential Renovation/Addition

David D. Quillin Architecture, for "Elliott Island Residence", Residential New Construction

Kimmel Studio Architects, for "Tudor Renovation", Residential Renovation/Addition

Barton Ross & Partners, LLC, for "Shady Rest Golf & Country Club Restoration", Non-Residential Renovation/Addition - This project also received recognition for Community Impact

Merit:

HD Squared Architects, for "Riverside Residence", Residential New Construction

Whitney Bailey Cox & Magnani, LLC, for "Prince Frederick Volunteer Rescue Squad", Non-Residential New Construction

Hammond Wilson Architects, for "Annapolis Yacht Club - Main Clubhouse", Non-Residential Renovation/Addition

Sustainability:

HD Squared Architects, for "Riverside Residence", Residential New Construction

Honor:

HGA, for "Washington College Hodson Boathouse", Non-Residential New Construction

McInturff Architects, for "Parker Metal", Non-Residential Renovation/Addition

GriD architects, for "Spa Creek House", Residential New Construction

Shinberg.Levinas Architects, for "Woods Residence", Residential Renovation/Addition

People's Choice:

Voting for student and professional People's Choice Awards was completed by guests prior to the program, and the winners announced at the conclusion. The $500 scholarship award winner in the student category, sponsored and presented by David Mallon of Horizon Builders Group, went to Mark Davis for his design project, "Chance, Order, Change - Annapolis Modern Art Museum". The professional People's Choice Award, sponsored and presented by Meredith Hillyer of Lynbrook of Annapolis, went to Kimmel Studio Architects for "Tidewater Modern". Congratulations to all winners!
