Top 10 Instagram posts of 2019
With over a billion monthly users, Instagram is the second most popular social media platform after Facebook. AIA National’s Instagram following grew to over 46,000 this year, and its evocative photos of international design projects both large and small garnered thousands of comments and likes. These were AIA’s most-liked images in 2019, featuring design excellence across countries and project types.
1. Dominus Estate
This striking image of a stone-centric design for the Dominus Estate vineyard in Yountville, California, won a 2019 Architectural Photography Award from AIA Los Angeles.
2. Evans Tree House at Garvan Woodland Gardens
This tree house by Modus Studio, a 2019 AIA Small Project Award winner, was designed with the intention of providing an interactive educational experience to visiting children at Garvan Woodland Gardens in Hot Springs, Arkansas, part of an ambitious plan to invite children and youth back into nature.
3. Remembering I.M. Pei
On May 16, 2019, 1979 AIA Gold Medal Winner I.M. Pei, FAIA, died at the age of 102. “Like the iconic pyramid at the courtyard of the Louvre, I.M. Pei, FAIA, created lanterns that shone a light with the power of architecture,” said AIA EVP/Chief Executive Officer Robert Ivy, FAIA.
4. Bigwin Island Club Cabins
The Bigwin Island Club Cabins, located on an island in the middle of a lake in the Muskoka region of Ontario, Canada take the form of a porch house under a monolithic shingled roof. The cabins won a 2019 AIA Housing Award.
5. St. Patrick's Cathedral
The restoration of New York’s St. Patrick’s Cathedral, completed in 2017, won a 2019 AIA COTE Top Ten Award. Among the significant upgrades, the ceiling was restored to original architect James Renwick Jr.’s intended paint scheme, and the stained-glass windows were cleaned, repaired, and framed with protective glazing.
6. Tashjian Bee and Pollinator Discovery Center
Located in the University of Minnesota’s Landscape Arboretum, the Tashjian Bee and Pollinator Discovery Center won a 2019 COTE Top Ten Award. It’s a hub for community outreach and education, featuring displays, exhibits, and a honey extraction room.
7. United States Courthouse – Los Angeles
This design for a new federal courthouse in Los Angeles centralized the courts’ functions within one building, and it also serves as an iconic cubic form for the Central District of California. It won a 2019 AIA Honor Award for Architecture.
8. Mirror Point Cottage
This 2019 AIA Housing Award-winning cottage in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, Canada, was commissioned as a vacation home for a local fisherman’s daughter. Its elevated form demonstrates the Nova Scotia vernacular in an elegant manner.
9. South 5th Residence
Concrete, mill-finished steel and raw stucco define the exterior of this Austin, Texas home, the winner of a 2019 AIA Small Project Award.
10. Hyundai Capital Convention Hall
This convention hall in Seoul, South Korea—and winner of a 2019 AIA Interior Architecture Honor Award—finds inspiration in the West Coast minimalist Light and Space Movement of the 1960s and 70s. A molded acoustical plaster shell forms the basis of the interior.
