Everything is Connected
The last half of my career has been dedicated to espousing the benefits of Architect-led, integrated sustainable design and construction project delivery. Underpinning this philosophy is the knowledge that everything is connected. From global markets, and supply chains, to climate and cultures, we share one world. The situation we face today drives home the point we are globally connected. And always have been.
Today the AIA’s Code of Ethics require that AIA members “…inform their clients of the potential environmental impacts or consequences…” and “…consider with their clients the environmental effects of their project decisions,” and include changes addressing equity and justice.
I urge Architects to take this one step further and starting today, responsibly inform our clients that every design decision has the real potential to impact locally and globally. Money, materials and resources travel to and from across the globe, from America and all other nations and back again. This virus has shown us a couple of things without question. Global society is both fragile and resilient, and everything is connected.
The Wisconsin Architects Foundation looks forward to continuing to serve our membership and students wishing to be part of this noble profession. I personally look forward to fellowship with you all very soon.
Please stay safe and well.
