AIA Grand Rapids Names 2020 Honor Award Recipients

The Grand Rapids Chapter of the American Institute of Architects celebrated several Architects, Firms, Projects and individual Honorees last week during its 2020 Honor Awards Celebration Live Broadcast.  AIA Grand Rapids, a local component of the American Institute of Architects, advocates for the value of architecture and gives architects the resources they need to do their best work through educational opportunities, government advocacy, community redevelopment, and public outreach to support the architecture profession.

The 2020 Honor Awards was held virtually on October 29, 2020. Through its annual Honor Awards Program, the AIA Grand Rapids Chapter continues to recognize excellence in architecture throughout the region. The program promotes the value of good design and encourages our Members to pursue excellence through their work and service to the community.

This year AIA Grand Rapids member architects were asked and encouraged to think about their project submissions through the lens of the AIA Framework for Design Excellence.  Last year was a transformative year for the architecture profession. At the 2019 AIA National Convention the American Institute of Architects adopted the Resolution for Urgent and Sustained Climate Action embarking the profession on a journey to holistically address climate change. Thereafter, the AIA Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct was updated to include recommendations for addressing environmental equity and injustice. As a result, the architect’s duty to protect the health, safety and welfare of the public now has a much broader meaning.

The AIA Framework for Design Excellence was created to call architects to action and strive to be a better professional through the ten guiding principles that point toward a zero carbon, equitable, resilient, and healthy built environment.

All 2020 project submission entries were eligible for 2020 Sustainability Design Award consideration. Projects awarded in this category exemplify the integration of design excellence and sustainable performance using the AIA’s Framework for Design Excellence as the standard against which each submission was evaluated.
