Four diverse projects were recognized for Excellence in Architectural Design by the 2016 Honor Awards program of the Kentucky Society of Architects (AIA Kentucky).  The following winners were acknowledged at a ceremony on Thursday, September 15, 2016 during the Society’s annual convention.

Speed Art Museum Expansion – Louisville, KY

HONOR AWARD – New Construction, greater than $5M

Architect:                            K. Norman Berry Associates Architects, Louisville

Architect:                            wHY Architecture, New York

Owner:                                 Speed art Museum

Jury Comments:

“This was one of the projects that we agreed to award immediately and unanimously. Its simple volume is clad in a custom folded panel that gives it a softness and animating texture. The material palette and siting work well with the existing museum. The smart siting allows beautiful views from the lobby to the historic building.”

Knoxville Botanical Garden & Arboretum Visitor Pavilion – Knoxville, TN

HONOR AWARD – Additions/Renovations/Restoration, less than $5M

Architect:                            de Leon & Primmer Architecture Workshop, Louisville

Owner:                                 Knoxville Botanical Garden & Arboretum

Jury Comments:

“This design immediately caught our attention. Its transformation of a dusty storage barn is handled with great inventiveness, skill and energy. The logic that generated the folded mesh skin resulted in a varied skin with a modest number of variables. The skin and ceiling play against one another creating a dynamic tension, particularly in evening light.”

Calospa – Lexington, KY

HONOR AWARD – Small Project Award, less than $1M

Architect:                                            NOMI Architecture. Design. Fabrication., Lexington

Owner:                                                 Calobrace & Mizuguchi Plastic Surgery Center

Jury Comments:

“This design demonstrates the power of a simple generative idea. The often misused curvilinear wall, in this case, plays a subtle role of creating a sense of relaxation in the carefully edited space. Further it delineates the boundary between front and back of house. The design succeeds in creating a relaxing ethereal experience.”

Gilbert Residence – Louisville, KY

HONOR AWARD – Small Project Award, less than $1M

Architect:                            Architectural Artisans, Louisville

Owner:                                 David Gilbert

Jury Comments:

“This project successfully transforms a small modern historic residence while respecting the original case study design typology. Simple additions of porch, fence and pool follow the case study experiment of simple, economical living in a restrained pragmatic design voice.”

THE JURY

The jurors met July 13, 2016 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to review the 35 entries received for the 2016 awards program. The Minneapolis-based jury members were:

•             Julie Snow, FAIA, Principal, Snow Kreilich Architects, Minneapolis (Jury Chair)

•             Steven Dwyer, AIA, Principal, Hammel, Green & Abrahamson, Inc., Minneapolis

•             Maura Rockcastle, Principal, TEN x TEN, Minneapolis

•             Marc Swackhamer, Assoc. AIA, Partner, HouMinn Practice, Minneapolis

Each submission was weighed individually, not in comparison with one another, and the jury was free to select as many or as few projects as it determined to be worthy of recognition. Projects selected were deemed to have successfully met the scope of challenges with which the architect was presented.
