Expansion Joint Fundamentals and Field Practice (A)

Overview

AIA NE Wisconsin

Buildings wage a constant battle against Mother Nature. In addition to wind and weather, buildings must be able to withstand movement – whether from thermal conditions, seismic tremors or windload. This course addresses some of the basic knowledge needed to understand the role expansion joint systems play in structural integrity. In addition, it addresses some of the common field problems encountered in putting joint systems in place. And finally, it presents a challenging look at fire barriers and the changes that need to be made by manufacturers and the AEC industry to ensure joint systems meet the prescribed fire ratings.

Learning Objectives:

  • Acquire a basic understanding of expansion joint systems
  • Identify some of the most-common field problems pertaining to expansion joint installation
  • Recognize fire barrier missteps that put building occupants at risk
  • Identify the practice changes necessary to ensure proper fire-barrier installation
