Planning for Community Resilience in Madison and Dane County

The course will explore the evolution of the City of Madison’s Urban Design Districts (UDDs), the unique role that architects play in designing for and building community resilience, and value of professional/government relationships. The discussion will review the (8) UDDs and the Urban Design Commission’s (UDC) role in reviewing proposed projects. There will also be a discussion on the value of designing for resilience and the direct impact on community flooding, including a case study of the recent AIA – Dane County flood response.
- Examine Madison’s (8) Urban Design Districts and Design Guidelines.
- Explore the value of community planning and “Designing for Resilience”
- Examine the benefits of professional partnerships with government organizations and how they can enhance community resilience.
- Review a case study of professional/government partnership: Dane County’s recent AIA flood response.
