2020 graduates and early career professionals are entering the profession at an unprecedented time. With social distancing guidelines, and states slowly lifting their stay-at-home orders, starting your career can be a daunting task. As the profession prepares for economic uncertainty, firms must be more discerning about how they grow their staff. Hear from three firm leaders and a recently hired emerging professional on what firms are looking for in potential candidates. Learn tips on how to stand out from the crowd and navigate the interviewing process. Finally, prepare yourself for the virtual onboarding process and integrating yourself into the team from afar.

Speakers

Timothy Curtiss Hawk, FAIA

Hawk is the President of WSA Studio in Columbus, Ohio, and has developed a practice strength focused on the design of buildings with significant, sustainable interior environments. He has prepared space programs, designs, and documents for clients in a wide range of project types and is adept at implementing a process that drives strategy. The firm has received many awards for projects completed under his leadership. Hawk holds a Master of Architecture from Ohio State University and has completed post-graduate studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago in the History of Architecture and Art. Currently, he teaches architectural history, practice, and design at Columbus State. He is an effective presenter and has presented across the country on design topics and the value of civic engagement.

Nathaniel Clark, AIA, NOMA

Nathaniel graduated from Louisiana State University in 1996 as the first African American awarded the College of Art + Design Dean’s Medal. Having been recruited nationally by major design firms, Nathaniel accepted a position in Baton Rouge, where he climbed from intern to Vice President of a 40 person firm in only eight years. Upon resigning as Vice President in 2005, Nathaniel moved to Atlanta and created Chasm Architecture to offer comprehensive planning, design, and delivery methods to a full range of markets. As the Managing Partner of Chasm, Nathaniel has over 24 years of professional architectural experience with responsibilities inclusive of managing and directing the firm as well as the following: Strategic Partnering, Design, Marketing, Master Planning, Project Coordination, and Contract Administration. Nathaniel has expert experience in many market sectors and continues to expand the Chasm brand daily.

Nicole Washburn, AIA

Nicole Washburn is the Director of Operations for JLG Architects, a 100% employee-owned architecture firm producing over $40M in revenue every year.  Nicole joined JLG in 2007 as a Project Manager, later being named one of the company’s youngest shareholders – before the ESOP – as well as a Principal Architect and a member of the Board of Directors.  In her role as Director of Operations, Nicole oversees the processes for project delivery, team composition, project management, and is directly involved in hiring and performance evaluation. Building her career on a passion for well-managed, client-focused services and constant improvement, the growth Nicole has accomplished within the company is a demonstration of JLG's definition of Opportunity: "Opportunity emerges when an individual's skills, abilities, interest, and goals are well communicated, pursued with dedication, and strongly align with a company need."  Nicole is a graduate of North Dakota State University, and has been a member of the American Institute of Architects since 2001.

Jonathon Jacobs, Assoc. AIA

With joy, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude, Jonathon collaborates with clients and team members to incorporate their ideas into visualizations that bring stakeholders on board. Three-dimensional renderings and construction documents are among how Jonathon engages his audiences. He was also an early adopter of virtual reality, recognizing that technology’s ability to immerse clients in a potential workplace environment to elicit their responses. Jonathon excels at drawing out collaborators’ input and gently guiding them in new directions that result in projects that exceed expectations. Jonathon also teaches Revit I and Revit II at Minneapolis Community and Technical College and is a source of expertise for building information modeling.
