Conference

2018 AIA Kansas EVOLVE Conference

Overview

Each year, AIA Kansas hosts a gathering place for multidisciplinary discourse and discovery, bringing together thought leaders in architecture and design from around the region and beyond to learn and explore together. This year’s conference will offer a diverse range of continuing education sessions and programming on the issues and opportunities that position architects and allied professionals to improve communities through design work. Notable sessions highlighting community engagement and celebrating community-focused design will feature upcoming 2019 President of the Institute, Bill Bates, FAIA; Anne Marie Duvall Decker, FAIA; and a continuing education session track specifically focused on community engagement, leadership and design.

The event will also feature building and community tours around Overland Park and networking opportunities at the opening Design Awards Celebration and at the closing networking social. Pre-conference events will feature two options for hands-on learning and engagement at the community disaster assessment training workshop and a Community Engagement Workshop. The Community Engagement Workshop was developed specifically to share resources and strategies with architects and community leaders as they think about their community development vision and goals.

We invite all architects, allied professionals, community leaders, business community members, and policymakers to join us in a diverse mix of educational programs, workshops, and networking events.

Public Work - Architecture as an Instrument 1 LU/HSW

Thursday, Oct. 4

8:45 - 9:45 am

Each new or renovated building changes its community. These interventions have consequences in the lives of hundreds, maybe thousands of people who encounter them. Architects should be responsible to program, budget and schedule, but more importantly, they should be responsible to the public value of each project, outside of its lot lines. Architecture can promote cultural growth by becoming alive in our experience, placing us between comfort and challenge, the known and the curious. It can expand our senses, capacity and understanding of who we are and who we want to be.

Bill Bates, FAIA and 2019 AIA President Elect

As Vice President of Real Estate for Eat’n Park Hospitality Group, Bill Bates is responsible for the restaurant growth division. He also managed the design and construction of 1.4 million square feet of office, laboratory, and manufacturing space with Marconi, Inc.His many leadership positions and civic volunteer work also demonstrate the importance connecting the built environment, communities, and culture: He has led AIA chapters, its Diversity Council, and founded the National Organization of Minority Architects Pittsburgh Chapter. He is on the board of both the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation, and the Green Building Alliance.
