NAAB-accredited degree holder eligibility

You must have recently graduated with a NAAB-accredited Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate professional degree in architecture within the past 18 months.*

Non-accredited degree holders or individuals enrolled in an AXP (formerly IDP) program working under an architect's supervision eligibility

You must:

  • currently work under the supervision of an architect in a professional or technical capacity directly related to the practice of architecture and
  • recently graduated with a non-NAAB Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate degree within the past 18 months* OR
  • currently work under the supervision of an architect in a professional or technical capacity directly related to the practice of architecture and
  • currently enrolled or participating in circumstances recognized by licensing authorities as constituting credit towards architectural licensure

Prepare for the ARE® with a variety of AIA resources to assist you in passing the exam and getting that architect stamp you’ve been working for, including ArchiPrep, AIA's premier ARE prep resource designed to help emerging professionals get licensed faster. Reach out to your local AIA chapter to find study groups, prep sessions, and study materials. Working alongside other AIA members can ease the sometimes-daunting task of preparing for the exam.

Incentives and promotions

Free membership for up to 18 months*

Graduates of accredited schools of architecture may receive complimentary membership with the AIA at the Associate level for up to 18 months after graduation. Non-NAAB degree holders or individuals enrolled in an AXP Program Working under an Architect's Supervision may also be eligible for Up to 18 months complimentary membership.

You may receive free membership with the AIA for up to 18 months. This promotion begins upon the date of graduation* and not your join date (e.g., a June 2020 graduate who joins in June 2021 receives complimentary membership through December 31, 2021). This incentive is offered one-time only and can be redeemed after earning either an eligible undergraduate degree, graduate degree, or post-graduate degree.

Your membership will be at the Associate level until you receive full licensure and have the opportunity to become an architect member. Please note that the AIA is a three-tiered organization. Although your membership is at the national, state, and local levels, this promotional offer applies only to dues for the national component. Some local and state AIA chapters charge a nominal membership fee. For questions regarding your local or state chapter, call (800) 242 3837, option 2.

Tax deductible dues statement

For state and federal income tax purposes, payments to the AIA and its components are generally deductible as trade or business expenses—except for the percentage spent on lobbying federal or state governments. Consult a tax professional to determine the appropriate tax treatment of your dues.
