The AIA Academy of Architecture for Health (AAH) has selected seven recipients of the AIA/AAH Healthcare Design Awards.

The award program showcases the best healthcare building design and healthcare design-oriented research. Projects exhibit conceptual strengths that solve aesthetic, civic, urban, and social concerns as well as the requisite functional and sustainability concerns of a hospital.

Recipients were selected in four different categories:

  • Category A: Built: Less than $25 million in construction cost
  • Category B: Built: More than $25 million in construction cost
  • Category C: Renovations/Remodeled: Primarily built within existing hospital or clinical space, or adaptive reuse of an existing building to a healthcare use
  • Category D: Unbuilt: must be commissioned for compensation by a client with the authority and intention to build

Many types of projects were submitted, and each award was given for a different reason. The jurors were looking for projects with a point of view; successful projects knew this and presented their point of view well. The jurors were impressed by the variety of projects that represented the many different versions of what healthcare is and can be in today’s practice.
