2018 AIA/HUD Secretary's Awards
Celebrating projects that demonstrate affordable, accessible, and well-designed housing
Every year, the Office of the Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development teams with AIA’s Housing Knowledge Community to celebrate projects that demonstrate affordable, accessible and well-designed housing, proving that good design is not exclusive.
Five88
The largest affordable development to open in San Francisco in the past 10 years, Five88 delivers nearly 200 family homes and 10,000 square feet of supporting retail space to the costly city. The project has established a gateway to the developing Mission Bay neighborhood, providing quick access to transit, the recently completed USCF Medical Center, and a future park.
Station 162 Apartments
Supporting the housing mission of Quadriplegics United Against Dependency (QUAD), Station 162 is the fifth project the organization has developed overall and its first since 2004. QUAD was founded in 1975 by Bud Myers, an appliance repairman who, after being injured in a diving accident, discovered that housing and support services for newly injured quadriplegics were nonexistent in and around Portland, OR. Since then, QUAD has become a leader in promoting autonomy and independence.
