Renovation to West Pavilion 3rd Floor Nursing Unit

23 Bed Inpatient Unit

Project Description:

UAB Medicine is proposing to renovate West Pavilion 3rd floor (WP 3) into a 23 bed inpatient unit.  Currently, WP 3 is occupied by the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit (BMT), and BMT will move to the Women and Infants’ Center in the summer of 2020.  The unit currently has 17 inpatient rooms and an adjacent outpatient clinic.  Once vacated, the project will construct a new 23 bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

University Hospital continues to run a high midnight occupancy census consistently above 85%.  The midnight occupancy census shows the number of patients in a staffed and operational bed at midnight; the number is an average over the entire year.  During a typical weekday, the hospital cares for a significantly high number of patients as new patients are arriving and receiving care in diagnostic and treatment areas such as the operating rooms, Heart and Vascular Center, Emergency Department, Endoscopy, etc. When medically appropriate, inpatients are discharged from the hospital to home or other appropriate locations.  Next, the patient rooms are cleaned and patients from the aforementioned diagnostic and treatment areas are moved into the recently cleaned rooms. At occupancy rates above 85%, any disruption or delay in the system of discharging patients, cleaning the rooms and transporting patients can cause significant delays in areas such as the operating room or emergency department and may prevent the transfer of patients from outside facilities.

Constructing the new 23 bed inpatient unit will increase the staffed and operational bed capacity at University Hospital.

Construction of Inpatient Nursing Unit

Callahan Eye Hospital

Project Description:

UAB Callahan Eye Hospital is proposing to renovate the 5th floor of the Medical Office Building into a 19 bed inpatient unit and add a bridge connecting Callahan Eye and UAB Hospital across 7th Avenue South. Closely integrated, UAB Callahan Eye Hospital (CEH) and UAB Hospital share resources such as lab services, information technology support, food and nutrition services and others.  The ability to move patients between facilities and further share resources is limited by the reality the two facilities are not physically connected; this project will remedy that.  The addition of the 19 beds will serve both facilities; for CEH, the addition of the 19 beds will increase the hospital’s inpatient census. For UAB Hospital, the 19 additional beds are needed capacity to alleviate a taxed system and cohort patients.

The 5th floor of UAB CEH has been used as an ambulatory clinic; the floor can be vacated and renovated into a 19 bed unit.  The services anticipated to occupy the unit are a cohort of Neuroscience and Medical patients, and the Neuroscience cohort will require seizure-monitoring services.  These seizure-monitoring patients typically have scheduled admissions and require limited support from diagnostic and testing capabilities located off the unit.  The unit requires specialized equipment installed in the room, which monitors patients’ seizure activity during their stay.  The other group of patients likely to be cared for in the unit are general medicine patients.
