The Summit at Rockwood South Hill

Architect: Perkins Eastman and NAC Architecture

Owner: Rockwood Retirement Communities

Location: Spokane, Washington

Rockwood’s conviction that wellness is at the heart of their mission inspired the architects to integrate Biophilic design principles that reflect the eight dimensions of wellness, and offer residents and staff a place that instills a sense of vitality. On the interior, designers shaped the main corridor to emulate the flow of a river, reminiscent of the Spokane River, and called it “The Riverwalk,” which allows users to experience the spatiality of natural shapes and fosters a place-based, spiritual relationship with the geographically and ecologically verdant, hydrophilic Pacific Northwest.

Jury comments

The Summit at Rockwood South Hill is a strong independent living element that complements and enhances an existing campus. The jury particularly liked the curvilinear corridor through the amenity spaces. That element of the design opened up different views around each bend and linked the amenity spaces in a seamless and relaxed flow.
