Abiitan Mill City is a nod to the past and a vision for the future. Abiitan and the larger master plan site design were inspired by the area history and developed with a future focus on urban connectivity. Within this framework, we created a plaza space that bridges two buildings around the historic rail spur location. A shared street concept, called a “Woonerf,” was designed to create connectivity between the buildings, the downtown core and the Mississippi River Parkway. Through this connectivity and overall position in the city, Abiitan promotes resident health through walkability and rich pedestrian experiences.

Jury comments

The historic architecture reflects the industrial context with a material palate of glass and brick. The designers also integrated vegetated walls, green roofs and pervious pavings to soften the edges of the building as it meets the street level. While the character of the building is more industrial than traditional retirement communities the mixed use setting is perfectly scaled and the park like amenities make it very approachable.
