Allison Albericci, AIA

A dedicated proponent of sustainable architecture, Allison Albericci, AIA, is an expert in the design of complex mixed-use and transit-oriented projects in urban areas. Her work has advanced interdisciplinary collaboration and realized more vibrant communities thanks to strengthened bonds between architects, urban designers, and city planners.

As a staff architect for the City and County of San Francisco Planning Department, Albericci is responsible for the review of development proposals of all scales and types. Driven by the challenge to create innovative and holistic urban solutions, she is a key figure for responding to and educating the public, policymakers, and elected officials.

Previously, Albericci was an associate and senior urban designer at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP’s San Francisco office, where she led a team in developing the design standards and guidelines for the redevelopment of the city’s India Basin. The project, which garnered a 2017 AIA California Council Urban Design Merit Award and relied heavily on her unique skillset, addressed the transformation of former industrial land on tidal flats where the city meets the bay. The multi-phased, mixed-use development features pedestrian priority; when completed, basic daily needs will all be within a short jaunt. The project’s focus on placemaking also facilitates a dynamic open space network of interwoven parks, plazas, and social spaces.

At the University of California Merced, Albericci was lead campus planner for the school’s 2020 Project Campus Expansion Plan. To enhance a student-focused mission centered on cultivation of a community bound by learning, she geared the plan to support 10,000 students through comprehensive development organized in a compact fabric. Overall, the plan reinforces the university’s ideals of stewardship through sustainable facilities, mirroring its teaching and research mission to move toward the achievement of triple net zero.

Beyond her responsibilities in the office, Albericci is a prolific speaker, working to raise community awareness and increase knowledge-sharing. In the past three years alone she has organized and moderated more than a dozen events, addressing a diverse number of issues affecting the profession. Beginning with her time at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she received her Master of Science in Architecture Studies (SMArchS), Albericci has displayed an aptitude for educating others. At MIT she helped lead five courses across a number of departments, helping budding city planners appreciate physical design and equipping architecture students with a better understanding of vital urban issues.

Standing out as a leader who thinks big and acts bravely, Albericci is a guiding force for the future of urban America. Her expertise and bridge-building interdisciplinary outlook have produced important contributions to the profession.
