Celebrating World Architecture Day
Today, we celebrate World Architecture Day—a day to recognize the extraordinary role architecture plays in shaping our world. This year’s World Architecture Day theme, “Housing is a Human Right. Build it”, is a call to action for architects everywhere.
Architecture defines our cities. It reflects our cultures. It creates the places where we live, work, learn, gather, heal, and build our lives.
But celebration alone is not enough.
There is much work to do.
The United Nations tells us that the world is building the equivalent of a city the size of Paris every week. What we build today will define the world we inhabit tomorrow.
So the question before us is not simply how much we build, but what kind of world are we building?
Will we build places that are resilient, healthy, regenerative, and safe? Places that strengthen communities rather than leave people vulnerable? Places that can withstand the shocks and stresses of a changing world?
We must.
This year’s World Architecture Day theme—“Housing is a Human Right. Build it.”—is a call to action for architects everywhere.
Housing is not simply a roof over our heads. It is the foundation for health, safety, security, dignity, and community. And building more housing cannot mean simply building more units. We must build housing that is safe, healthy, affordable, resilient, and designed to endure.
This is work the AIA has been advancing for decades—at home and around the world. AIA has advocated for policies that expand access to housing while improving its quality and resilience, and our engagement extends to the global stage. Through our longstanding engagement with the UN and our participation in the UNFCCC and COP process, we are bringing the voice of architects to the global conversation about climate, housing, resilience, and human well-being.
We have taken that voice to the table because housing, climate, resilience, and human well-being are inseparable.
Today, hundreds of millions of people lack adequate housing, while increasing natural and human-made hazards are placing millions more at risk.
For architects, this is not an abstract challenge. It is central to our responsibility to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public.
And our responsibility extends beyond new construction. Architecture is part of a heritage stretching back thousands of years—preserved through our cities, our landscapes, our buildings, our art, and our stories. Architecture is at the heart of global identity.
We must honor those foundations while having the courage to build what the future requires.
And we are already moving forward.
Coming out of New York City Climate Week, our engagement with Climate Mayors, our partners across disciplines and sectors, and our global network of architects is helping to turn shared commitments into action. These relationships are not simply conversations—they are helping us build an agenda for the AIA as we look toward COP31 and beyond.
As President of the American Institute of Architects, I believe this is our moment to align our profession around action: to build the housing the world needs, to reduce disaster risk, to advance regenerative design, and to create places where people and communities can thrive.
Housing is a human right. Build it. Build it to last. Build it for people. Build it for the future.
We have the knowledge.
We have the talent.
We have the responsibility.
Now we must put it to work.
Let’s make every day World Architecture Day—a day when we move from aspiration to substantive action, working together to secure our collective future not just for today, but for the next seven generations.
On World Architecture Day, let us celebrate what architecture has given the world—and commit ourselves to what architecture must give the future.
Leadership can’t wait. We must be the change we need to see in the world.
