WASHINGTON – February 24, 2026 – Small firms are vital to the architectural profession, making up 74 percent of architectural businesses. These firms vary widely in roles, structures, and compensation practices.
Based on data from hundreds of small firms nationwide, The AIA Small Firm Compensation & Benefits Report offers a detailed look at salaries, benefits, and workplace practices, providing valuable insights into the economic conditions shaping these businesses. The report focuses on sole practitioners and firms with fewer than three architectural staff—complementing the broader AIA Compensation & Benefits Report.
Key findings of The AIA Small Firm Compensation & Benefits Report include:
- Enhanced Support for Professionals: More firms are offering licensure support, AIA membership dues, mentorship programs, and flexible work arrangements, including remote work, flexible hours, and parental accommodations.
- Compensation Shifts: Staff architects and emerging professionals saw modest pay increases, with average annual compensation rising by 4.4 percent from 2023 to 2025.
- Post-Pandemic Adjustments: After strong salary growth in 2021-2022, leaders at small firms experienced salary declines from 2023 to 2025, reflecting tighter business conditions as billings and backlogs softened.
- Student Hiring: In 2024, 55 percent of small firms (5+ employees) hired at least one architecture student for part-time work.
